My topic today is all about caring for our skin as we age. Before we get into details let’s review why quality and safety matter when using essential oils. Quality matters in any essential oil application. When we are talking about using oils for skincare and emotional support it is incredibly important that you understand the what a true high quality essential oil actually is. High quality essential oils are very potent.
High quality essential oils possess a molecular frequency and therapeutic constituents such as monoterpenes, phenols and sesquiterpenes that our body is uniquely created to use for physical, spiritual and emotional support.

And now let’s talk about skincare and how using essential oils can reduce fine lines and improve a dull complexion to give us healthy glowing skin no matter our age.
How to use Essential Oils to support a healthy glowing complexion for women over 50
It’s no secret, as we age our skin can become more prone to dryness, wrinkles and other signs of aging. The loss of collagen in our skin is the primary reason for the fine lines and wrinkles. Using high quality essential oils and a healthy diet can help nourish and revitalize the skin. Essential oils to incorporate into your skincare routine to reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars and promote a youthful glow are:
Frankincense - Create your own natural serum by filling a 15 ml dropper bottle with argan or jojoba oil. Add 4 drops of Frankincense essential oil and shake to mix. Gently massage the serum into your skin each night before bed (don’t forget to massage some into your hands).
Myrrh - use myrrh for enlarged pores, breakouts, infections and blemishes or wounds. Myrrh oil has powerful astringent properties that are known to strengthen the skin cells and reduce inflammation. It also calms irritated skin. Use it after shaving to reduce irritation by mixing 5 drops of Myrrh EO into 5 mls of a carrier oil such as Olive, Almond or Jojoba.
Sandalwood - is used in Ayurvedic treatments for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis. This precious oil has antiseptic properties and a mild drying effect, making it excellent for acne prone skin. Apply it to breakouts to speed healing. Sandalwood is also extremely effective for relieving situational anxiety and stress. Diffuse it in your bedroom or wherever you dress for the day to ensure a calm start to your day.
Rose - It requires 60,000 rose petals to make 1 oz. of high quality rose essential oil. Rose eo helps heal skin injuries and reduce scarring, it moisturizes the skin and promotes circulation. Use 1 drop of rose eo in a tablespoon of almond or olive oil and gently massage it into your scalp and hair. Leave it on over night (protect your bed linens with a silk bonnet). Shampoo your hair normally the following day for silky, soft locks. Add 1-2 drops of rose eo to your morning facial moisturizer before applying makeup for a smooth, youthful glow.
Neroli -Extracted from the orange blossom, neroli eo eliminates a dull, uneven skin tone and brightens the complexion. To help your skin look and feel its very best, why not try an at home steam facial using this exceptional oil. Heat 400 ml of water in a kettle, pour it into a bowl and add 3 drops each of neroli and geranium essential oil. Put your face over the bowl, and drape a towel over both your head and the bowl. Stay there for 5-10 minutes allowing the steam to open up your pores. For a nontoxic toner; dampen a cotton pad with water then add two drops of neroli essential oil. Sweep it across your face, taking care to avoid your eye area. Use day and night after cleansing to experience a youthful glow!
If you should get essential oils in your eyes, DO NOT rinse with water! Flush with any oil that is liquid at room temperature such as olive, sesame, almond oil etc. will immediately relieve the discomfort.
The essential oils discussed here are some of the rarest and most expensive oils available. One 5 ml. bottle contains between 75-150 drops depending on the viscosity of the oil. Each drop is precious and powerful. Three drops of Neroli in your steam facial is sufficient as is two drops of rose in your morning moisturizer. Essential oils are volatile compounds extracted from the flowers, barks, stems, leaves, roots, fruits and other parts of plants by steam extraction and distillation. These complex hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, esters, phenols and terpenes continue to fascinate scientists!
Creating a self-care ritual out of a daily routine such as skin care can make it a mindfulness experience you actually look forward to. I hope you will give these skincare essential oils a try.
